Malavoglia The Fountain is a sculpture group located in Piazza Giovanni Verga, Catania.
with great skepticism by many artists of Carmelo Mendola, a self-taught sculptor Catania (1895-1976), took part in a national competition launched November 10, 1956 for the construction of a monument to Giovanni Verga, by position the center of the square. The draft Mendola convinced the committee and won the competition. The creation of sculptural lasted 19 years and ended October 25, 1975, with the opening of Fontana in the clearing in front of the palace of the Grand Hotel Excelsior. Mendel died shortly afterwards, in February 1976, due to a brain hemorrhage.
The subject of the work is the dramatic scene of the sinking of the "Providence", the ship Malavoglia and successful homonymous novel by Verga in 1881. The tension between the bodies to mourn, but at the same time in action, is faithful to that described by Verga in the corresponding passage in the novel:
"We could hear the wind whistling in the sail of Providence and the rope that sounded like a guitar string. Suddenly the wind began to whistle like the railroad car, when out of the hole of the mountain, above Trezza, and a wave came that he had not seen from where it was coming, which made creaking like a sack Providence nuts, and threw in the air. [...] In this moment they heard a crash: Providence, which was first bent on one side, took over as a spring, and nearly all surges into the sea to sail along the antenna fell on boat route as a straw. Then they heard a voice shouting: - Ah! as one who was going to die. [...] Suddenly a gust of wind tore the net and took her away whistling. Then the two brothers were able to unravel all of the stub antenna and throw it into the sea. The boat righted itself, but padron 'Ntoni not straightened up, he, and no longer responded to' Ntoni calling him. Now, when the sea and the wind cry together, there is nothing that makes more fear of not be heard to respond to voice calls. "
(Giovanni Verga, I Malavoglia, chap. X)
The combined effect of the jets of water between the intersections of the base gives the whole fountain a great dramatic effect.
